You may have heard about us from someone who was very happy with their results or found us online while looking for a way to better your health and avoid habit-forming medications and/or surgery.  However you found us, you probably want to know what we do that makes such a difference in the lives of those we care for.

Corrective Chiropractic, LLC. is not owned by a franchise. Everything we do is geared specifically to your needs and not to the expectations of another business entity.

Structural Chiropractic Care is used to restore function through correcting the spinal structure.  Corrective Chiropractic strives to improve the health and function of the Central Nervous System—the control center of the entire body.  If the flow of energy through the Central Nervous System is too weak, blocked or otherwise disturbed, disease or discomfort results.  Structural Chiropractic will not only assist in stopping the pain but also, more importantly, to promote healing.  The Central Nervous System gives many signals when things are wrong in the body.  During a Structural Chiropractic Exam, Dr. Wickstrom is assessing these signals and composing a comprehensive picture of the underlying reasons why you have secondary symptoms.

Corrective Chiropractic will provide a Corrective Care Plan designed to reduce or eliminate the primary condition while using precise measurements of the spine taken during the examination.  Our team will work to help return your spine to as normal and healthy as possible restoring normal spinal curves, reducing abnormal lateral curves (scoliosis), strengthening the spinal musculature, balancing structure, and even allowing for certain levels of regeneration of the bones, discs, and other soft tissues.

While all doctors want their patients to be free of pain, the focus of corrective based chiropractic is to remove as much nerve interference as possible through a specific rehabilitative program of spinal adjustments, Isometric Stabilization Therapies and Spinal Remodeling that are customized for each individual.  Results are not based on how the patient feels, but on re-examination and follow up Structural Corrective Radiographs—the only methods that provide tangible evidence of improvement in the primary condition.

Rest assured that your Chiropractic treatment will be designed with you specifically in mind – not just your symptoms, but you as a whole individual.

During your initial phase of care, you will likely have multiple visits per week.  We will make every attempt to accommodate your schedule!  However, there may be times when you may need to leave work for an appointment.  A note will be provided as needed.

We do have an appointment reminder program in place; our staff will make sure you have access to this benefit.  If you happen to miss an appointment, you will receive a call, text, or email from our office.  Any missed visits will need to be rescheduled to complete your plan of care.  You have chosen to invest in your health and in order to achieve the desired results; your specific care schedule must be followed.

We will announce schedule changes on our Facebook & Twitter page, Answering machine, the Corrective Chiropractic periodical and website – www.correctivechironc.com, and on the front door.  In the event of an emergency, you may receive an email, or if you have an appointment on that day, a phone call from the office to reschedule.

In the event that you need to reschedule an appointment, we require 24 hours’ notice.   If your appointment is Monday, or a day that the office is closed, please text or email and we will call you back to reschedule.

Payment is required in full prior to services rendered.   We accept payment via cash, check, Health Savings Accounts (HSA’s), FLEX Spending Accounts, PayPal, Care Credit, MasterCard, American Express, Visa, and Discover. Returned checks will be charged a $25.00 fee in addition to the original charge.  Should you discontinue care for any reason all outstanding balances at the Pay-Per-Visit Cash Fee will become immediately due and payable by you in full.

NOT ALL INSURANCES COVER CHIROPRACTIC CARE. When Chiropractic is covered, INSURANCES PRIMARILY COVER PAIN/SYMPTOM CARE. The chiropractic care provided beyond the resolution of symptoms is labeled “Stabilization Care” by insurance companies and thus is not usually covered. Even in the presence of symptoms chiropractic care is not always covered by insurance.ou will be responsible for payment in full, and any payments received will be credited to your account or returned to you. Our fees are reasonable and customary for care in this area. We do offer prepayment plans for your convenience.

If you are not covered with one of the insurance companies below you will be responsible for payment in full, and any payments received will be credited to your account or returned to you. Our fees are reasonable and customary for care in this area. We do offer prepayment plans for your convenience.

If you do not see your insurance company listed below, Corrective Chiropractic may still be able to file as a courtesy, as a non-participating provider.

When you arrive, please sign-in using the iPad with your unique code, usually the 6 digits of your DOB (MMDDYY).  If you cannot remember your code, the front desk will be happy to verify it for you.
Please have a seat and await notification as to which table you will need to check into.
Once in the adjusting area, please remove any jewelry, watches, heels or sandals.  If you prefer to remove a tie or other article of external clothing, please do so before the doctor enters the adjusting area.
Have a seat on the adjusting table or lay face down and relax.

After your treatment is completed, you will proceed to the therapy area, or the staff will verify your next appointment.
We make every effort to keep things running smoothly and on time.  There are times when you might have to wait due to situations beyond our control and we ask you to please be patient if this occurs.

On each visit, the doctor will perform certain procedures to evaluate your progress and determine the extent of the adjustment needed that day.
Carefully planned adjustments, Isometric Stabilization Therapies, and Spinal Remodeling gently shifts improperly aligned joints, muscles, and ligaments back towards normal.

ADJUSTMENTS:

The body parts are positioned and adjusted in the exact opposite position of the abnormal alignment, determined by the scientifically based examination of your spinal structure, including digital radiograph analysis, while Dr. Wickstrom performs an adjustment.   Your adjustments will be performed using a specially designed instrument (arthro-stim), using a table with moveable drops, or by hand.

The amount of adjusting on each visit can vary; some visits might include only one adjustment or several.  While you can advise the doctor of changes you are experiencing, it is not necessary to discuss symptoms on each visit.  Please use the iPad sign in system to indicate any symptoms.

Symptoms are generally secondary conditions that arise as your body attempts to stabilize, manage and heal.  While unpleasant, secondary conditions are a necessary part of the body’s function and healing.  Your adjustment will be based on primary indicators garnered from your neurological and structural presentation.

Isometric Stabilization Therapies:

Isometric Stabilization Therapies, designed specifically for you and your needs, will improve flexibility, strengthen weakened muscles, and help your body maintain the proper sense of structural balance and muscle tone.  The spine is maneuvered (by you!) into the exact opposite position of the abnormal alignment determined by digital weight-bearing analysis and x-rays.

SPINAL REMODELING:

Spinal segments in your neck, mid-back, and lower back, and pelvis are stretched, pulled, and/or pushed into proper alignment by shifting the body tissues away from their incorrect positions.

Over time, and with carefully prescribed amounts of pressure and duration, spinal remodeling has been shown to help restore proper alignment.

The Denneroll Orthotic Traction Devices are among the tools that allow you to continue chiropractor-prescribed spinal remodeling at home—or anywhere outside the office.  Designed to provide proper support to specific areas of the neck and upper back, lower back, and mid back, a Denneroll Orthotic Traction Device may be used practically anywhere.

Your Denneroll Orthotic Traction Device may not be used by anyone but yourself.

If needed, please visit the restroom before you SIGN IN.

Please remove heels, flip-flops, sandals or backless shoes, as they tend to fall off when you lay on the adjusting table. Otherwise please leave your shoes on.   This includes during inclement weather within reason.  Please do not worry about your shoes/boots being soiled; we will take care of any debris left behind.

Please remove necklaces and earrings prior to being adjusted as they could hinder the doctor and possibly be damaged or lost.  Please place all personal items in the space provided (basket/bowl) in the adjusting area.  This will ensure that you do not forget anything when you leave.

If you are wearing a heavy/bulky shirt, please wear a t-shirt or camisole underneath to ensure we can still adjust you properly.  If wearing a skirt, we recommend bringing a pair of shorts or leggings to put on under your skirt, as there are some adjustments that require movement of the legs.  HOWEVER, SHORTS CAN BE PROVIDED UPON REQUEST PRIOR TO SIGNING IN.

It is virtually impossible for us to avoid affecting any makeup you may be wearing since you will be lying face down during at least part of your visit.   We recommend no makeup or coming prepared to fix your makeup should you be wearing any, or apply it after your adjustment if preferred.  We also ask that you avoid excessive perfume as many people have sensitivities to perfumes.

Regarding children:

We LOVE kids!  For their safety please ensure all children are supervised and in the same room with you while in the office.  We do everything we can to child proof but we need our parents to keep them from getting into things as well.  Most importantly children are not permitted under the adjusting tables.  Our tables have moving parts and there are cords around.

DO NOT accept or make any non-EMERGENCY phone calls while in the office. Please silence your cell phones before entering the office.

The process of structural correction can create reactions by the body including soreness and discomfort. If you experience these reactions during your care, do NOT apply ice, heat or use a heating pad unless specifically told to do so. Call if you have any questions or concerns we will be glad to help.

If possible, movement (10-15 minute walk) is the best course of action for these situations unless otherwise directed.

Drink plenty of water and eat sensibly as recommended. Your body needs the correct building blocks to heal.
Further, it is important to understand that you will not always feel instant relief after being adjusted. Correction takes time – please give your body time to work through the primary conditions that created the need for your secondary conditions.

As part of a complete program of care, there will be certain items that we recommend to help you achieve the best result. Such items may include: Cervical Support Pillows, whole food supplements, and Spinal Stabilization Devices. Further, there is a wellness library available for patients to utilize.

Whole Food Supplementation Prescription:

The human body has a remarkable capacity to heal itself and prevent future potential health problems provided the necessary raw materials are in place so that it can do the job it was designed to do.  In creating a nutritional whole food supplementation prescription, Corrective Chiropractic uses supplements that come exclusively from two companies. They are “Standard Process” and “MediHerb”.

Standard Process and MediHerb supply the highest quality whole food supplements in the industry.  Food Supplements listed below are often recommended.  These nutritional supplements are designed for overall body maintenance and are made from only the best quality raw materials.

These may include:

  • Catalyn: The ultimate whole food Multi-Vitamin product that puts youthful energy back into all of your tissues.
  • Trace Minerals: You’ll easily combat stress, sleep better and have balanced brain chemistry with a perfectly balanced mineral complex.
  • Tuna Omega-3: A perfectly balanced blend of Essential Fatty Acids necessary to maintain tissue health, brain chemistry, immune function and many other vital requirements.

A more specific whole foods prescription program may be necessary.

Pillows:

In order to rest well at night and properly support the structure of the spine, a proper Cervical Support Pillow is highly recommended. We do NOT recommend stomach sleeping. The only acceptable ways of sleeping are as follows:

  1. Sleeping on your back with one Cervical Support Pillow under your head.
  2. Sleeping on your side with one Cervical Support Pillow under your head and another pillow between your knees or a body pillow that is held onto and also between your knees. An appropriate Cervical Support Pillow will be recommended to you based on your sleeping habits.

Mattresses:

Be mindful that most mattresses have chemical flame retardants in them. We have found a few options to avoid these types of dangerous chemicals. 100% Natural Latex mattresses made from the sap of rubber trees are some of the best natural options; however, the technology for making these mattresses requires a higher price.

ChiroSlumber makes a latex mattress but for those who prefer the memory foam style mattress or who have latex allergies we recommend one of their three memory foam options.  ChiroSlumber is the only company we have seen that makes a mattress similar to the most well-known Temperpedic Memory Foam™ but uses a fire retardant cover instead of the highly toxic chemicals.

Remember the ONLY way to determine if a mattress is right for you is by SLEEPING on it, not laying down on it for a few minutes but actually sleeping on it for a several days or weeks.  This is why a well-supported return policy is essential than being able to actually touch or “try” the bed for a few minutes.  Again this is why we recommend ChiroSlumber because they have a 120-day return policy and will even pay for return shipping.

I understand that this is a lot of information about a bed but you’re going to spend a LOT more time on your mattress that you will in our office so it is important that it properly support your spine.  ChiroSlumber is the only mattress design by a chiropractor and although it is NOT the only recommend mattresses for good spine health it is the best we have found.

*Disclaimer: ChiroSlumber, like other mattress companies (e.g. Temperpedic), offer chiropractors a small referral bonus for any patients we refer who purchase their mattress. This is NOT why we recommend ANY product. Please feel free to refuse to inform ChiroSlumber who you heard about their mattress from. Our priority is sharing with you the best resources available to stay healthy and accomplish your structural correction goals. Dr. Wickstrom sleeps on their mattress and has found, through many hours of research that they have the best product to help his patients.

Footwear:

We recommend that you invest in shoes that give you ample support and cushion. It is vital that you have proper arch support no matter the style of shoe or boot and this is one area where you need to spend a little more money for a better quality product. A shoe that has either a clasp or ties over the instep is preferred as it “holds” your foot onto the shoe bed. Excellent examples include NAOT, Born, Clarks, Dansko, and Merrell.

Unless advised differently, we ask that you follow these general recommendations:

  • Sugar:  Sugar stops your immune system for 4-5 hours and it takes 3 full days to recover.  It will slow your healing.  Since our goal is to get you healed as quickly as possible, the consumption of processed sugar will sabotage that goal.  It’s recommended to abstain from sugar intake, especially sodas, as quickly as you can. Artificial Sweeteners will contribute to a decline in your overall health, especially brain function.  This includes Aspartame (NutriSweet, Equal, Spoonfuls), Saccharin (Sweet n’ Low), Sucralose (Splenda), and Acesulfame K.
  • Coffee:  Coffee interferes in many ways with the healing process.   It demineralizes, or “steals” minerals from your body, inhibits nutrients from being absorbed and contributes to low functioning adrenal glands (causing you to be fatigued, lessening control of sugar, and inhibiting your natural anti-inflammatory response).  It can overall worsen your condition and slow your progress.
  • Alcohol:  Alcohol is a sugar and behaves the same as above.  In addition, it places undue stress on the liver.  Since the liver controls at least 400 different functions in the body, this too will inhibit your progress.
  • Water Intake:  Water is critical to health.  We have recommendations on how to increase your water intake please see the included Gradients Sheet.
  • Exercise:  If you are exercising, Dr. Wickstrom will need to know what exercise training you are performing as these can add stress onto your system. If you are not exercising, we encourage you to begin an exercise program that will add benefit to your life.

As we improve your neurological and structural efficiency through our care, your external posture will start to improve as a result.  However, bad posture habits can negatively affect this improvement and there are basic guidelines you can follow.

Standing Posture:

When standing it is important to stand “tall” with your shoulders mildly retracted back by opening the shoulders and facing the palms forward with the head level with the ground.  If you have to stand for extended periods of time, shift your weight from leg to leg but take care not to spend any period of time on any one leg more than the other.  Tighten your buttocks and abdominals while breathing to help in this process.

Sitting Posture:

If work requires you to sit for extended periods, you need to get up as often as possible and move.  The human body is not designed to sit for extended periods.

Make sure you have a high-quality chair that has adjustable arms, height, lumbar support and ample padding.  Sitting is fine for short periods but please move as much as you can.

Recliners are not great for the spine due to their inherent soft nature and tendency to cause people to lift their heads forward trying to sit up even though they are reclined.  Firmer, more vertical back chairs with occasional ottoman usage are preferred for home.  Undue stress on the spine can be created by prolonged leg crossing and ottoman usage.

Locking your ankles or crossing the legs for any period of time is not recommended.

Sitting in your car can be tricky on long drives.  Most car seats do not have adequate lumbar support – if necessary please use additional support behind your low back.  Keep the back of the seat upright and avoid leaning too far back.

When driving, try not to “slouch” to one side and make sure the headrest is no more than one inch from the back your head.  Change your car seat periodically position settings during a longer drive to simulate movement of the body.

On long drives please get out to stretch and walk around as frequently as you can, optimally once per hour.  Don’t turn your head to look at the driver while you speak, as this will introduce unnecessary stressors onto the spine.

And for pity sake, STAY OFF YOU PHONE WHILE DRIVING!  Pitt County has one of, if not THE highest rate of car crashes in the state. While you may believe you can safely multitask while driving, many other drivers cannot and it behooves you to be ever ready for careless drivers. Car collisions, even at slow speeds of 5-15 mph, will most certainly require additional chiropractic care at the very minimum depending on the severity.

If you are reading this line, you have likely read this entire manual and truly do value your health. If you have any questions about anything in this manual, please ask us. We are truly appreciative that you have chosen to enhance your health and well-being with us. We do not take that for granted and will do whatever is necessary to ensure your success in achieving and maintaining optimum health.

With elevated health,

Dr. Wickstrom and Corrective Chiropractic staff
